This is a seminar aimed at the research and clinical community to update and inform them of three very recent research projects undertaken by the Daffodil Centre Prostate Cancer research team. The research covers issues relevant to primary and secondary prevention in prostate cancer and also outlines the process undertaken to update Australian guidelines on Early Detection of Prostate Cancer.
- Dr Basil Razi, MPhil Student and Urology Registrar, the Daffodil Centre, Cancer Council, “Male Breast and Prostate Cancer: two sides of the same coin?”
- Dr Visalini Nair-Shalliker, Senior Research Fellow, the Daffodil Centre, Cancer Council, “High-dose vitamin D supplementation and prostate cancer progression: a phase II randomised trial in localised prostate cancer cases with intermediate risk of progression (ProsD)”
- Associate Professor David Smith, Deputy Director, the Daffodil Centre, Cancer Council, “Australian guidelines for the early detection of prostate cancer”

Dr Basil Razi
Dr Basil Razi is a Urology Registrar at the Royal North Shore Hospital and an MPhil student at Daffodil Centre. He has undertaken research on prostate and bladder conditions, including the underactive bladder and the role of AI in patient education. Dr Razi holds degrees in Medical Science, Science (Honours), and Medicine, and is affiliated with several major hospitals across New South Wales.

Dr Visalini Nair-Shalliker
Dr Visalini Nair-Shalliker is a senior research fellow at the Daffodil Centre. Dr Nair-Shalliker's research focuses on identifying environmental, lifestyle and molecular risk factors of prostate cancer, to improve our understanding on the independent and interactive effects between modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, using large datasets. Their current research involves developing a behavioural and lifestyle risk prediction tool for the early detection of clinically significant prostate cancer. She recently completed a phase 2 randomised control trial of vitamin D supplementation in men with clinically significant prostate cancer – the ProsD, which she will be presenting in this webinar.

Associate Professor David Smith
Associate Professor David Smith is Deputy Director of the Daffodil Centre and leader of the Prostate Cancer Research Team at Cancer Council NSW. He is a nationally recognised leader in prostate cancer epidemiology. He has led major research initiatives focused on cancer outcomes, early detection, and survivorship. David brings deep expertise in observational studies, clinical trials, and health policy translation.
