Our national clinical trial, known as the MAIL, GP and SCALE trial, is currently underway to support bowel cancer screening in General Practice. Led by Daffodil Centre researcher Associate Professor Eleonora Feletto, the co-designed general practice-led intervention aims to increase participation in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP).
Trial update
The MAIL, GP & SCALE trial is in progress at over 80 General Practices across Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia. The General Practices are being supported by Clinical Trial Coordinators and their Primary Health Network to promote the NBCSP. In the intervention arm, General Practices are undertaking a multi-component intervention developed based on findings from an evidence review and co-design process led by the research team. The intervention, targeted at the whole-of-practice, includes a decision aid, electronic prompt, integration of clinical software with the National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR) and education. To identify how to best support uptake of the intervention, participating General Practices were involved in discussions to identify potential barriers and design solutions to support implementation.

What's next...
The trial is set to conclude in May 2025. The findings of the trial will help to inform which combination of individual, health service, and population level interventions are most effective to improve bowel cancer screening outcomes in Australia.
