Navigating Cancer Risk: Prevention, Screening and Improving Outcomes

The Daffodil Centre’s world-leading cancer control research includes risk-based approaches to prevention, early detection, screening and precancer interception. Research is focused on strengthening approaches to cancer control considering personal health and biological factors (including genomic predispositions or medical conditions), behavioural, aetiologic, social, structural or environmental factors. Our research uses world-leading population science, modelling, risk prediction and implementation science approaches to inform interventions in cancer control in Australia and globally, ultimately saving more lives.

Our researchers are working on:

  • Optimising screening, detection, and surveillance for breast cancer in Australia
  • Improving melanoma prevention and early detection in Australia
  • Evaluating new approaches to testing and surveillance for prostate cancer
  • Evaluating new strategies for tobacco control and lung cancer screening in Australia and in other high-income countries
  • Conducting epidemiological evaluations of cancer risk factors including alcohol consumption, smoking, use of opioids, physical activity and body mass index
  • Identifying women at increased risk of ovarian cancer and strategies for prevention and cancer control
  • Optimising detection and management of hereditary cancers, including cancers related to Lynch Syndrome
  • Understanding the role of direct-to-consumer genomic testing including, public perspectives and assessment of the benefits, harms, and health system demand
  • Tailoring melanoma screening and surveillance according to individual risk
  • Developing cancer risk prediction models for validation and evaluation.
